Critical Self Reflection

Cambridge has given us a variety of briefs that could do, I chose the music promotion package brief because we thought that it would be fun to make. The brief given to me said that I needed to create a music video as well as social media so we could promote our music video. We decide to choose the genre pop because it is the type of genre that most people listen to. In this project I worked as a group of 4, my partners were Narent, Dyfan and Sam.You can find links to their blogs in my blog.

How do your products represent social groups or issues?

Our products represent social groups and issues in a way that correlates to those who have relations with their old friends  in a nostalgic way. We had an idea of making a montage video since we are graduating soon. We want to make something that could relate to us in the future as well as the older generation. In our music video, we chose to use a dark empty room as our set, to show that he is stranded and alone. We used a specific lighting area that highlighted our actor to make it feel that he is lonely though this is only the first part of our music video. For the rest of the music video we have a compilation of different activities that teenagers would do during their high school eras. During those weeks of filming, we had lots of events to film with. We try to make it as natural as possible so we don't tell anyone about the project and start to film randomly as our colleagues can't act at all. Shots are mostly done by our phone, we don’t want that HD quality effects for the montage as we want it to have that nostalgic vibe to it. We tried to represent those who are lonely in a way that a lot of people could relate to( Dark room, alone, nothing to do, trying to kill time). We have put out feelings and emotion to this music video so the audience could feel what we have felt before. Though this idea later on subverted, during the montage clips, happiness shows that “we” were happy during those times and had fun during the high school era. Not only high schoolers, this could imply to a childhood friend.

How do the elements of your production work together to create a sense of ‘branding’

By inputting elements such as noise.grainy into our production, our work has created a sense of branding in a way that the audience could recognize what we are trying to implement to our work. This element could be seen throughout our production from music videos, social media and digipak. By adding elements of darkness, grainy, noise as well as a polaroid frame, it helps the audience to know what genre or message we are giving to them as well as it makes it easier to distinguish our brand from other people. Small details like font, colour, art style are being carried all over our production. We use the same font for the title of the music video as well as the cover of our digipak, and there are other aspects as well that correlate to our theme. We try our best to use these elements all over our production, I would say fonts for has a major role for our production as we try to match it with our concept, we put a marker type of font for the front cover of our digipak and a typewriter for the back cover for our song list, we tried to use different elements to show aesthetics and old nostalgia vibe.

How do your products engage with the audience?

We engage with our audience through social media. Since social media is an app that could interact with people, we thought it would be easier for us to interact with our audience. We try to involve our audience in a way that could make the audience feel like they are a part of the band, we thought having them to feel that way could promote our products. Instagram has a big role for us to interact with our audience. We made a specific post where we ask our audience to post their memories picture and use hashtag #s4nd in their caption not mentioning that we would post a random audience who contributed to the challenge. Then we would like to post regarding the hashtags as well as comment on them saying “thank you for supporting us” or  “thank you for sharing!!”. It makes it that we are thankful to our audience. You could see this in my social media research. Not only that, we did a collaboration with another team which was EVE. We try to make our audience guess who we would collaborate with, with this audience would be more curious and engage more towards the hint that we have given. Another way we try to engage is merch. We have made 3 different merch designs which you could check in our social media description. In fact one of the merch was designed specifically to engage with the audience, they could upload their own picture into our merch. In this way it would satisfy both us and the audience.

How did your research inform your products and the way they use or challenge conventions?

My research has informed me of my products and the way they use or challenge conventions in a positive way. Research could be tracked down ever since we started the project. We have watched multiple music videos as classmates in which every video has a different genre or budget. We compare both high budget as well as low budget to meet our expectation/ satisfaction for our project. Not only that we did our own research as well with a total amount of 6 music video research. 2 big ones and 4 small ones. I have taken music videos from high budget to low budget as well as artists who inspire me the most. I have concluded that each and individual artist has a different style on how they target the audience. Out of all the research I have done, the one that caught my eyes was DPR IAN. I like how he tells his story through his creation from music to the video as well. It's vague and yet it leaves that curiosity hanging in the audience's head which leads to engaging the audience. I took that as an inspiration and tried to implement that in our teaser as well as music video. Most of my research is done through Youtube as I try to get inspiration throughout the music video that I am interested in. Though my research is not heavily related to our project. We still use that elements that DPR IAN used. We were more
